Backpack the entire 65-mile Border Route Trail through the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The BWCAW is a 1-million acre wilderness area, with over 1,100 lakes.

While canoeing and watercraft are the main attraction in the BWCAW, the Border Route Trail is one of Minnesota’s best-kept secrets, passing through some of the most remote wilderness in the state. This means the potential for lots of solitude during the day and unbelievably bright, star-filled skies at night. The trail is rugged, climbing and descending palisades that overlook both the BWCAW and Canada’s sprawling Quetico Provencial Park, and passing by stunning waterfalls and basalt columns.

This wilderness area is bursting with wildlife, including moose, wolves, beavers, bears, lynx, deer, eagles, otters, and plentiful waterfowl.

This trip begins at the eastern terminus of the Border Route Trail, near Grand Marais, MN. We will camp in the wilderness, with our tents overlooking quiet lakes, with fantastic views of the stars. After 5 full days on the trail, we will spend a relaxing evening and eat a delicious dinner at Gunflint Lodge. The final day of our trip, we end with a day hike to the Western terminus of the trail, before catching our shuttle back to Grand Marais.

LEVEL 4 TRIP: Participants should have prior backpacking experience, be in good physical condition, and able to hike up to 13 miles over uneven terrain, carrying 35lbs.

We provide all major high-end, lightweight gear for participants to use, as well as all food for the entire trip. If you would like to use your own gear, we will consult with you to ensure that your gear is appropriate for this trip.

Registration closes 30-days prior to trip start.

Our goal is to provide an unforgettable wilderness experience. This trip will challenge you, but we will provide the support, education, and logistical know-how to help you leap-frog the hard lessons. And we guarantee you’ll have a lot of fun!
